Berwickshire News and General Advertiser – Sabbath observance at Stobs

At a meeting of Hawick United Free Presbytery, Rev. Mr Smith reported that while the military camp at Stobs added materially to the prosperity of Hawick, it did not observe the Sabbath with cricket, football and quoiting being engaged at Stobs Camp on the Lord’s Day, while musical revelry in the canteen marred the sanctity of the day.   In addition, crowds on the road from Hawick to the camp on some Sundays had resembled at great show.
