Berwickshire News and General Advertiser – Potential restructuring under the new Army Scheme

26 July 1904

Speculation that under the new Army Scheme, the Borderer’s Depot will be moved from Berwick-upon-Tweed to the new War Office ground at Stobs, Hawick.   Once at Stobs, the Borderers will combine with at least three other Scottish Regiments – selected probably from the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) – the senior Regiment of the Line – whose depot is at Glencorse, which is No 1 Regimental District of the British Army; the Royal Scots Fusiliers, Depot at Ayr, this being Regimental District No. 21; the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), Depot presently at Hamilton, this being Regimental District No. 26; the Border Regiment, Depot presently at Carlisle, this being Regimental District No. 34; the Highland Light Infantry, Depot presently at Hamilton, this being Regimental District No. 71 as well as No. 26; and Princess Louise’s (Argyll and Sutherland) Highlanders, Depot presently at Stirling, this being Regimental District No. 91.   As a result, the four Depots presently scattered across Scotland will be concentrated at Stobs under one staff.   Each of the existing Depots have a Colonel Commanding the Regimental District and an Adjutant as well as half a dozen officers, a Sergeant-Major, and a Quarter Master Sergeant and the restructure will lead to an overall reduction in ranks.
