In the early months of the camp, an Officer was put in charge of “public relations”, to calm any problems with the local farming community. As one report put it:

‘In the course of the military operations that there is every likelihood that it will be necessary for the troops to invade ground which has not been acquired for the manoeuvres…’ and the War Department was anxious to show it was ‘desirous of coming to an amicable understanding’.

Metal poles, about 8ft high with a cross piece, were placed round the Government Boundaries of Stobs Estate with the express intention that Officers were requested to see that their men did not go beyond these points when manoeuvring.
