Berwickshire News and General Advertiser – Three escaped prisoners of war from Stobs

Three German prisoners of war escaped from Stobs Camp on Friday – Godbarsen, aged 21, height 5 ft 3 ins, fresh complexion, brown hair and blue eyes and a locksmith by profession.  Heilker, aged 27, height 5 ft 5 ins, fresh complexion, fair hair and grey eyes.   Anchor tattooed on right arm and a seaman by profession.   Julius Schmidt aged 24, height 5 ft 3 ins, fresh complexion, fair hair and grey eyes and a sailor by profession.   All were members of the sunk German Cruiser Gneisenau.   Schmidt was captured by Seaman George Wilson, RN, who was home on leave and detained him whilst on the train at Tweedmouth, handing him over to police at Spittal.
