Berwickshire News and General Advertiser – No large-scale barrack accommodation to be built at Stobs

26 April 1904

A House of Commons announcement on Thursday confirmed that it had been decided to abandon the proposal to erect permanent barrack accommodation on a large scale at Stobs Camp, acknowledging that this will lead to a change in the military plans for the new centre.   Although plans had been prepared for proposed accommodation, no further work had been done.  While plans for barrack accommodation had been abandoned, huts would be built for use during musketry and other training.   Currently huts accommodating 200 men had been built with tents being used for the summer camping season.   The correspondent felt that the War Office had taken this decision because the maintenance of barracks in “popular counties” is preferable.
