The Berwick Advertiser – Five German prisoners escaped but captured within a week

2 November 1917

Last week five German prisoners escaped from the Internment camp at Stobs.   Descriptions of the men were promptly circulated and on Monday night Scotland Yard announced their capture on the Northumberland moors.   The village constable at Horsley (Otterburn) discovered that the men were hiding in a wood and planned for it to be surrounded by villagers, resulting in the Germans quickly surrendering.
